Freedom from Glasses & Contact Lenses

Do you crave freedom from glasses and contact lenses? If so, you may want to consider laser eye surgery. Laser eye surgery, such as LASIK and PRK, can give you clear, crisp vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

However, just like any other form of elective surgery, laser eye surgery is a big decision to make. To help you ensure your decision is well informed, Dr. Finley’s Family Eyecare offers laser eye surgery consultations.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery. During the procedure, your surgeon will create a small flap in the outer layer of your cornea (called the epithelium). This flap is then gently folded back and out of the way, revealing your cornea’s inner layers. Your surgeon will then use a laser to gently reshape your cornea’s inner layers, correcting your vision. When the procedure is finished, your surgeon will then gently reposition the outer flap.

PRK works very similarly to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap in the epithelium, this outer layer is removed entirely to allow your surgeon to access your cornea’s inner layers.

Once the surgery is complete, your epithelial cells will regrow over the next few days. Since the cells need to regrow, PRK has a longer recovery time than LASIK. However, PRK remains a solid choice for some patients, including those whose corneas are too thin for LASIK.

Also, because no flap is created during PRK, this procedure carries zero risk of flap-related complications.

During Your Consultation

Laser eye surgery isn’t a good choice for all patients, and there are a variety of factors to consider before making a decision. During your consultation, your optometrist will use a series of tests to evaluate factors including your pupil size, corneal thickness, and current prescription.

If laser eye surgery is a good choice for you, your optometrist will go over the benefits of the procedure and discuss any potential risks or complications that may arise. They will also walk you through the procedure, let you know what sort of results you can expect, and address any questions or concerns you may have.

If you decide to undergo surgery, your optometrist will schedule a series of follow up appointments with you, handle your pre and post-operative care, and work with your surgeon to ensure your procedure goes as smoothly as possible.

After Your Surgery

After your surgery, you will meet with your optometrist for your follow up appointments. These appointments are critical because they allow your optometrist to closely monitor your recovery and address any questions or concerns you may have about your eyes, the procedure, or the healing process.
