Don’t Suffer With Dry Eyes; Relief is Available

Dry eyes are more than just uncomfortable; if left untreated, they can impair your vision, and even lead to corneal damage.

You don’t need to continue to suffer from dry, irritated eyes. The friendly and experienced team at Dr. Finley’s Family Eyecare is here to help. As part of our commitment to providing only high-quality care, instead of just addressing your symptoms, we will conduct a complete dry eye assessment, then craft a tailored treatment plan to address the root cause of your dry eye symptoms.

For more information about dry eyes, and to determine which treatment option is best for you, please speak to your optometrist during your next appointment.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes have two root causes: insufficient tear volume and poor quality tears. Our eyes rely on our tears for lubrication, so when we don’t make enough tears, or the tears we produce aren’t high enough quality, it can lead to dry, irritated eyes.

Tears are made up of three main ingredients: water, an oil called meibum, and mucin. Meibum is used to form a protective layer on the outside of each tear, slowing the evaporation process. Mucin acts as a lubricant, ensuring our tears spread evenly over the surface of our eyes. When our tears evaporate too quickly, or don’t spread out evenly over the surface of our eyes, it can leave our eyes feeling dry and itchy.

Tears are produced by several different glands, both in and around our eyelids. However, tear production can be disrupted by a variety of factors, including age, certain medications, and certain medical conditions.

Dry eyes can also be caused by environmental factors, including dry or windy environments, which force our tears to evaporate too quickly and lead to dry eye.

Dry Eye Therapy at Dr. Finley’s Family Eyecare

Before we can create a custom treatment plan for your dry eyes, we need to determine the root cause. This is done using a complete dry eye assessment, which incorporates advanced diagnostic techniques. Like all services provided by Dr. Finley’s Family Eyecare, our complete dry eye assessment is MOA-approved.

Our diet plays a large role in our eye health, so depending on the root cause of your dry eyes, your optometrist may suggest nutritional supplements.

Some studies have found that a healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (which can be found in nuts, leafy greens, and fish) can reduce eye inflammation and increase meibum production, providing lasting relief for some forms of dry eye.

A large scale nutritional study completed in 2013 found that consuming vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc can improve our overall eye health.

Are your eyes dry and irritated? Speak to your optometrist about undergoing a complete dry eye assessment during your next appointment.

TearCare® is an open-eye in office procedure designed to target the underlying cause of evaporative dry eye. By applying heat directly to the eyelid TearCare melts the blockage within your meibomian glands.
